Renting from a private landlord is a necessary experience for many Londoners who are unable to buy their own home or secure social housing, but the unregulated nature of this tenure often results in some real housing horror stories.
Tenants need better protection, and landlords need proper statutory regulation. Labour made this call clear with our alternative budget for the Greater London Authority last year, when we called for an action research project to support the creation of a London-wide lettings agency and an official “know your rights” website.
But the Mayor has refused our call to clean up the private rented sector.
At this month’s Mayors Question Time, we are going to challenge the Mayor on his failure to stand up for renters in London.
But we could use your help. My colleague Tom Copley wants to hear from Londoners who have had a bad experience in the private rented sector. If you want to share your Housing Horror with Tom, visit his website and fill in the simple form here.
